Supervised driving hours: how to keep a log
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 9, 2026

The short answer: write down every practice drive the same day: the date, how long, day or night, and who supervised. Most US states ask for somewhere between 30 and 70 hours, with part of it after dark.
Rules differ by state and country, and they change. Check your state's requirements with its licensing agency before you rely on any number here.
What to record
- The date
- How long the drive was, in minutes
- Day or night
- The weather and the kind of roads
- What you practiced
- The supervising adult's name
Many states have their own form, and some want a parent's signature on it. Fill it in as you go. Rebuilding 50 hours from memory doesn't work.
Plan the hours
| Stage | Practice |
|---|---|
| First 5 hours | Empty parking lots: starting, stopping, steering, reversing |
| Hours 5 to 15 | Quiet streets: turns, stop signs, speed control, parking |
| Hours 15 to 30 | Busier roads: lane changes, traffic lights, merging |
| Hours 30 and up | Highways, night driving, rain, and longer trips |
Short, regular drives teach more than a few long ones. Two or three a week is a good pace.
Skills to tick off
- Parallel and angle parking
- Three-point turns
- Merging and highway exits
- Roundabouts
- Night driving
- Rain, and using the wipers and defroster
- What to do if pulled over, or after a crash
Teach the car, too
A new driver should be able to check tire pressure and oil, find the spare and the jack, read the dashboard lights, and know what fuel the car takes. Ten minutes in the driveway covers most of it.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.
