Brake pads and rotors: when to replace them
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 10, 2026

The short answer: most pads last somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 miles, depending on the car and how you drive. Replace them when about 3 mm of pad material is left. Don't wait for the grinding.
These are typical numbers, not your vehicle's own schedule. Your owner's manual wins.
Brakes are a safety system. Have a qualified mechanic do brake work unless you really know how. Never get under a car held up only by a jack.
Signs the pads are due
- A high squeal when you brake. Many pads have a small metal tab made to squeal when the pad is thin
- A grinding or scraping noise. The pad is gone and metal is on metal. Stop driving and have it fixed
- The brake warning light, on cars with pad sensors
- The car takes longer to stop, or the pedal sits lower than it used to
- You can see less than about 3 mm of pad through the wheel
How long things last
| Part | Typical life | What shortens it |
|---|---|---|
| Front pads | 30,000 to 70,000 miles | City driving, towing, hills |
| Rear pads | Often longer than the fronts | Some cars with stability control wear rears faster |
| Rotors | Often two sets of pads | Overheating, rust, running pads to metal |
| Brake fluid | About every 2 to 3 years | It absorbs water from the air over time |
When rotors need replacing
- The pedal or the steering wheel shakes when you brake
- Deep grooves you can catch a fingernail in
- A raised lip at the outer edge
- The rotor is below the minimum thickness stamped on it
Many shops replace rotors with the pads now, because new rotors are often cheaper than machining old ones.
Hybrids and electric cars
Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so pads can last far longer. The catch is that brakes that rarely work can rust and stick. A yearly clean and lube of the calipers matters more than on a gas car.
Don't forget the fluid
Brake fluid absorbs water, which lowers its boiling point and rusts the system from the inside. A shop can test it in a minute.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Questions
How long do brake pads last?
Typically 30,000 to 70,000 miles. City driving, towing and hills wear them faster.
Do I need new rotors with new pads?
Not always, but often. Replace rotors if they shake under braking, are deeply grooved, or are below the minimum thickness.
Is a squealing brake dangerous?
A squeal is usually the wear tab telling you the pads are thin. Book a brake check soon. A grinding noise means stop driving it.
