What a car's service history is worth when you sell
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 10, 2026

The short answer: a buyer's biggest fear is the thing they can't see. A dated record of services, with mileage, answers it. Cars with records tend to sell faster and closer to the asking price, because the seller can prove what they're saying.
How much it's worth depends on the car, the buyer and the market, so treat any figure you see quoted as an estimate.
What a buyer is really checking
- Was the oil changed on time? It's the best single sign of how the car was treated
- Have the big jobs been done? Timing belt, brakes, tires, battery, transmission service
- Does the mileage line up? Dated entries with odometer readings make a believable story
- Are recalls closed? A buyer can check, and many do
What counts as a record
| Record | How much weight it carries |
|---|---|
| Shop invoices with the date, mileage and VIN | The most. A third party wrote them |
| Receipts for parts, with a dated log of the work | Strong, for work you did yourself |
| A written or app log with dates and mileage | Good. Far better than nothing |
| "It's always been serviced" | None |
If you did the work yourself
DIY service is real service. Keep the parts receipt, write down the date and the odometer, and take a photo of the job. A buyer who knows cars will respect a careful home mechanic more than a stack of quick-lube stickers.
Starting late
- Gather what you have: invoices, emails from shops, credit card statements with shop names.
- Ask the shops you used. Most can reprint your service history.
- Ask a dealer for the recall and warranty work on your VIN.
- Start logging everything from today, with the mileage.
What to hand over
- The history in date order, with mileage
- Receipts for the big jobs
- The owner's manual and both keys
Leave out what isn't the buyer's business: what you paid, your insurance details and your personal notes.
Be straight about gaps
If there's a year with nothing written down, say so. An honest record with a gap beats a perfect story nobody believes.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Questions
Does a service history add value to a car?
It helps a car sell faster and helps you hold your asking price, because it proves the car was looked after. The amount depends on the car and the buyer.
Do DIY oil changes count?
Yes, if you can show them. Keep the parts receipts and a dated log with mileage.
Can I rebuild a lost service history?
Partly. Shops and dealers can often reprint their records for your VIN, and you can start a dated log today.
