Privacy policy
Effective October 18, 2026
Tagwell Auto helps you keep track of vehicle maintenance, fuel, paperwork and records. This policy explains what happens to the information you put into it, and into this website.
Tagwell Auto is operated by Proffitt Investment Holdings LLC, California, USA ("we", "us").
The short version
Tagwell Auto has no ads and never sells or shares your information. By default it keeps everything on your device. Information leaves your device only in the cases listed here.
| Who | What they receive | When |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA (US highway safety agency) | The VIN, or the make, model and year | When you look up a VIN or check for recalls, in the app or with this website's tools |
| Zippopotam.us and Open-Meteo | The zip code you typed, nothing else | Only if you turn on weather alerts |
| Open Food Facts | A barcode number, nothing else | When you scan a product barcode |
| Google Play (or the App Store) | Your purchase, handled by the store | Only if you buy Tagwell Auto Plus |
| RevenueCat | An anonymous app ID and your store receipt | In the phone app, once Plus is on sale, to check whether Plus is active |
| Amazon | The search words for a part, or the Amazon link you saved | Only when you tap an Amazon link |
| Supabase | Your email and your household's records | Only if you sign in to sync |
| PostHog and Sentry | Anonymous usage counts and crash reports | Only in a version of the app where we have switched them on, and never after you turn them off |
| Google Fonts and jsDelivr | A request for a font or a program file, with nothing of yours in it | Only in the web app, in a browser. The phone app carries its own copies and asks nobody |
| Google Maps or Apple Maps, and your phone, mail and calendar apps | What you send by tapping: a search, a number, an email, an event | Only when you tap the button |
Where your information is kept
Everything you enter is saved on your device: inside the app on your phone, or in your browser if you use the website. That includes vehicles, VINs and plates, odometer readings, service history, fuel and expense logs, documents and their photos, insurance details, accident records, drivers, driving logs, stars and rewards. Unless you sign in to sync, it is not uploaded to us or to anyone else.
VIN and plate numbers
A VIN or plate can identify you, so Tagwell Auto treats them as personal. They are shortened (like 1HGC…4821) in exports and shared pages unless you choose to show them in full. The service history made for a buyer shows the full VIN on purpose, because a buyer needs it to check the car, and you can switch that off.
Recalls and VIN lookup
When you look up a VIN, the app sends that VIN to NHTSA's free vehicle database to get the year, make and model. When it checks for recalls, it sends the make, model and year. NHTSA is a US government agency. No name, email or location is sent with these requests.
Location
Tagwell Auto reads your location only when you tap a button that needs it: I parked here, or Add my location in the accident and roadside screens. It reads it one time, while the app is open. The one exception is Track my drives, which is off unless you turn it on: then the app uses your location in the background to count the miles of each drive for your odometer. It keeps only each drive's distance and its start and end time; routes and places are never saved or sent, and a notification shows while a drive is being counted. Turn it off any time in More, Track my drives. The location is saved with that parking spot or accident record on your device, and goes nowhere unless you share the record or have sync on. If you tap the button that opens your maps app, the spot is handed to Google Maps or Apple Maps on your phone.
Camera and photos
The app asks for the camera only when you choose to scan a barcode or take a picture, and for your photos only when you choose one. Pictures are kept in the app on your device. When you scan a VIN, or take a photo of a registration, an insurance card or a receipt so the app can fill in the boxes, the words are read on your phone by the phone's own text reader. The picture is not sent to us or to anyone else.
Calendar, Bluetooth and notifications
Each of these is asked for only when you turn the feature on, and each works on your device alone.
- Calendar. If you choose Add to my phone's calendar, the app writes your due dates into a calendar on your phone. It does not send your other events anywhere.
- Bluetooth. If you connect an OBD-II reader, the app talks to that reader to read the odometer and trouble codes. What it reads stays in the app.
- Notifications. Reminders are scheduled on your phone by the phone itself. We do not send them and cannot see them.
Accounts and sync (optional)
You can use Tagwell Auto without an account. If you choose Sign in on the Vehicles tab, we collect your email address to send you a sign-in code. If you then start or join a household, everything listed above for that household, including photos and any location you added to an accident record, is stored on our database provider, Supabase, so it can appear on every phone in the household. Only people who have signed in and entered your household's invite code can read it. Anyone with the code can join, so share it only with people you trust. Data is encrypted in transit. Supabase's privacy policy is at supabase.com/privacy.
The sign-in is the same one Tagwell Home, our app for the house, uses, so one email works in both. Your vehicle records and your Tagwell Home records are kept apart, and neither app can read the other's.
Deleting your account and your information
You control your information. Use Reset on the Vehicles tab to clear a vehicle, or uninstall the app (or clear the website's data in your browser) to erase everything on the device. If you signed in, tap Delete my account under Sync and share. That erases any household you started with all of its records, removes you from any household you joined, and deletes your sign-in. If you also use Tagwell Home with the same email, the sign-in is kept so Tagwell Home keeps working, and the app tells you so. You can also ask us by email, as described on the delete account page.
Usage stats and crash reports
To find bugs and see which features are used, the app may send anonymous events (for example "app opened", "item marked done", "fill-up logged") and crash reports. These include a random ID created on your device, the app version, the type of device and the error details. They never include your name, email, vehicles, VINs, plates, locations, notes, people or photos. Stats are processed by PostHog (posthog.com/privacy) and crash reports by Sentry (sentry.io/privacy). You can turn this off any time in Vehicles, Customize, Help improve Tagwell Auto.
Borrower cards
If you make a borrower card, everything in it is packed into the link and QR code itself, after the # sign. Browsers never send that part to a server, so the card is not stored by us or by the website. Anyone who has the link or scans the code can read the card, so leave out garage codes, valet PINs and policy numbers unless you trust everyone who'll see it. Your insurance card is left off unless you add it.
Reminders and backups
Reminders are scheduled on your phone by the phone itself. Their text is worked out on your device and nothing is sent to us or anyone else. A backup file is made on your device and goes only where you choose to save or send it. It contains everything, including documents and photos, so keep it somewhere safe.
Weather alerts
If you turn on weather alerts, the app sends only the zip code you enter to the free Zippopotam.us service (to find the area) and the Open-Meteo weather service (to get the forecast). No other information is sent with it.
Barcode lookups
When you scan a product barcode, the app sends only the barcode number to the free Open Food Facts product databases (openfoodfacts.org, openproductsfacts.org and openbeautyfacts.org) to look up the product's name, brand and size. A scanned VIN is not sent to those databases.
Store links
Find it on Amazon, and the Amazon button on the shopping list, open Amazon's own app or website with the part's details as the search, or the Amazon link you saved. You sign in and pay there. Tagwell Auto never sees your Amazon password or card and never places an order for you. Amazon can see that the visit came from Tagwell Auto; nothing else about you or your vehicles is sent.
Some of these links may be affiliate links, so Tagwell Auto may earn a small commission when you buy, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, Tagwell Auto earns from qualifying purchases.
Subscriptions
Tagwell Auto Plus is an optional subscription in the phone app. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see your name, email or card. To check whether Plus is active on your phone, the app uses RevenueCat, a subscription service, which receives your store purchase receipt, an anonymous random app user ID, your device type and operating system version, and the app version. That purchase history is used only to unlock Plus and restore it on a new phone. RevenueCat's privacy policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy. The website version has no subscriptions and sends nothing.
Fonts and exports
The tools that make spreadsheet and PDF exports are part of the app. Exports and calendar files are created on your device and go only where you choose to send or save them. In a browser, the web app downloads its fonts from Google Fonts and one small animation file from jsDelivr, a public content delivery network. Those requests contain none of your information. The phone app carries its own copies and downloads neither.
Children and teens
Tagwell Auto is meant to be set up and managed by adults. A parent can add children and teens to a household so they can see their chores, earn stars or log practice drives, protected by a code the parent sets. Children and teens don't create accounts and don't give an email. If a parent turns on photo proof, a child's chore photos stay on the device and are deleted when the parent approves or sends back the chore. Their chores, stars and driving logs leave the device only if a parent turns on household sync, and then only to the parent's household. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
This website
tagwellauto.com is hosted by Netlify, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) to run and protect the site. If you send the contact form or sign up for launch news, we receive what you type, store it with Netlify Forms, and use it only to answer you or send that one email. Ask us and we'll delete it.
The VIN and recall tools. The VIN field on the home page, the VIN decoder and the recall check send the VIN, or the year, make and model, straight from your browser to NHTSA only. They are not sent to us, and we don't store them. Our stats record only that a lookup happened and the body style and power type, never the VIN.
The other free tools (warning lights, trouble codes, tire date, MPG, lease pace and oil interval) run entirely in your browser. What you type into them goes nowhere.
If you arrive through a creator's link (one ending in ?ref=), the site keeps that creator's code in your browser's storage for 30 days so we know which creator sent you. The code says nothing about you. The site also remembers your theme, your Pause motion choice and which of two headlines you were shown, in your browser only.
We count visits with PostHog in a cookieless mode: no cookies are set and no visitor profile is kept. If we run ads, ad partners (Google, Meta, TikTok and Pinterest) only load after you tap Accept on the cookie dialog, to measure which ads bring people to Tagwell Auto. You can change your choice any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page. Nothing you put in the app is ever shared with ad partners.
The web app at tagwellauto.com/app works the same way as the phone app described above: what you enter stays in your browser unless you sign in to sync.
How long it is kept, and where
What is on your device stays until you delete it or remove the app. If you sync, your household's records are kept on Supabase, on servers in the United States, until you delete them, leave the household, or delete your account. When you delete your account they are erased right away. Messages you send us are kept only as long as we need them to answer you.
Your choices
You can use the app with no account. You can see everything it holds, because it is all on your screens. You can take a copy with Export and backup. You can correct or delete any of it in the app, and delete a synced account in the app or by asking us. You can turn off usage stats and crash reports. If the law where you live gives you further rights over your information, such as the right to ask what we hold, write to us and we will answer within 30 days. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for advertising.
Keeping it safe
Information sent between the app and a server always travels encrypted. Synced records can be read only by the signed-in members of your household. No way of storing information is perfectly safe, so keep your own backup of anything that matters.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
