How often should you change your oil (really)?
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 9, 2026

The short answer: for most modern cars on synthetic oil, every 5,000 to 10,000 miles or every 6 to 12 months, whichever comes first. The old "every 3,000 miles" rule is out of date for most cars built in the last 15 years.
These are typical numbers, not your vehicle's own schedule. Your owner's manual wins.
Find your number
- Look in the owner's manual under maintenance schedule. It gives miles and months.
- If your car has an oil life monitor, follow it. It counts engine starts, temperature and trip length, not just miles.
- Check which schedule you're on. Most manuals have two: normal and severe.
Typical intervals
| Your car and driving | Change the oil |
|---|---|
| Modern car, full synthetic, normal driving | 7,500 to 10,000 miles or 12 months |
| Modern car, severe driving | 5,000 miles or 6 months |
| Older car or conventional oil | 3,000 to 5,000 miles or 6 months |
| Turbocharged or direct-injection engine | On the short side of the range |
| Car that's barely driven | At least once a year |
Why time matters too
Oil breaks down even when the car sits. Short trips never get the engine hot enough to boil off the water and fuel that collect in it. That's why the schedule says "or 6 months": a car driven 2,000 miles a year still needs fresh oil.
Signs it's overdue
- The oil on the dipstick is black and gritty, or below the low mark
- The oil light or the maintenance light is on
- The engine is louder than usual, especially at start-up
Check the level between changes
Once a month, on level ground with the engine off for a few minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe it, push it back in and pull it again. The oil should be between the two marks. Some engines use a quart between changes, and running low does more harm than running a little old.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Questions
Is the 3,000 mile oil change still needed?
For most cars built in the last 15 years, no. Modern engines and synthetic oils usually go 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Check your owner's manual.
How long can oil last if I don't drive much?
Change it at least once a year, or every 6 months if most of your trips are short. Oil breaks down with time and collects water and fuel.
Should I follow the oil life monitor?
Yes, if your car has one. It tracks how the engine is actually used. Still change the oil at least once a year.
