Oil change interval helper

Four questions about your car and how you drive it. You get a typical interval in miles and months.

What oil does it use?
How old is the car?
Does any of this describe most of your driving?
Turbocharged?

A typical interval, not your vehicle's own schedule. Your owner's manual wins, and so does the oil life monitor if your car has one.

Why time matters too

Oil breaks down even when the car sits. Short trips never get the engine hot enough to boil off the water and fuel that collect in it. That's why every schedule says "or 6 months" or "or 12 months": a car driven 2,000 miles a year still needs fresh oil.

Questions

Is the 3,000 mile oil change still needed?

For most cars built in the last 15 years, no. Modern engines on synthetic oil usually go 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Check your owner's manual.

What counts as severe driving?

Mostly short trips, stop-and-go traffic, long idling, very hot or cold weather, dusty or salted roads, towing, and rideshare or delivery work.

Should I follow the oil life monitor?

Yes, if your car has one. It tracks how the engine is actually used. Still change the oil at least once a year.

Track this automatically in Tagwell Auto

In Tagwell Auto an oil change is due by miles or months, whichever comes first. It estimates your mileage between odometer readings, so the reminder arrives on time.
