Normal vs severe service schedule: which one are you?
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 9, 2026

The short answer: if any one of the conditions below describes most of your driving, use the severe schedule. A lot of drivers are on it without knowing.
These are typical numbers, not your vehicle's own schedule. Your owner's manual wins.
What counts as severe
- Mostly short trips, under about 5 miles, or under 10 miles in freezing weather
- Stop-and-go city traffic or long idling
- Very hot or very cold weather
- Dusty, muddy, gravel or salted roads
- Towing a trailer, carrying heavy loads or using a roof box
- Mountain driving
- Rideshare, delivery, taxi or police use
"Normal" in a manual usually means steady highway driving in mild weather. That's fewer people than you'd think.
What changes
| Job | Normal (typical) | Severe (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | 7,500 to 10,000 miles | 5,000 miles or 6 months |
| Engine air filter | 20,000 to 30,000 miles | 10,000 to 15,000 miles |
| Brake inspection | Every year | Every 6 months |
| Transmission fluid | 60,000 miles or more | 30,000 miles |
| Tire pressure check | Monthly | Weekly, for rideshare and delivery |
Why short trips are hard on a car
An engine that never fully warms up never boils off the water and fuel that get into the oil. The oil turns to sludge sooner. The battery doesn't recharge fully, and the exhaust stays wet inside and rusts.
What to do
- Open your manual to the maintenance schedule and read the list of severe conditions. Each maker's list is a little different.
- If you match, follow the severe column.
- If your car has an oil life monitor, it already allows for most of this. Follow it, but keep to the time limits.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Tagwell Auto switches a vehicle to the severe schedule when you say it's used for rideshare, delivery or towing, and you can turn it on or off for any vehicle. Items on it are marked, with the reason.
Questions
What is a severe service schedule?
A shorter maintenance schedule in the owner's manual for hard use: short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extreme temperatures, dusty roads, towing and commercial use.
Are short trips really severe?
Yes. An engine that doesn't fully warm up collects water and fuel in its oil, so the oil needs changing sooner.
Does rideshare driving count as severe?
Yes. Lots of idling, stop-and-go driving and high mileage are all on the list.
