Selling your car: how service records raise the price
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 9, 2026

The short answer: a buyer can't see inside the engine. A folder of dated service records is the best proof they'll get that the car was looked after, and it gives you a reason to hold your price.
What to gather
- Every service, with the date and the mileage. Oil changes most of all
- Receipts for the big jobs: timing belt, brakes, tires, battery, transmission service
- Recall repair paperwork
- The owner's manual and both keys
- The title, and a lien release if there was a loan
No receipts? A written log with dates and mileage is still worth having. Start one today.
Before you list it
- Check for open recalls and have them fixed. It's free, and buyers check.
- Fix the cheap things: bulbs, wiper blades, a missing cap. Small faults make buyers wonder about big ones.
- Wash it, vacuum it and clean the glass. Take your things out.
- Take photos in daylight: all four sides, the interior, the odometer and the tires.
- Look up what similar cars are selling for near you.
What to hand the buyer
- A printed service history, in date order, with mileage
- The VIN, so they can run their own checks. A serious buyer will ask
- What you know is wrong with it. Honest sellers sell faster
Leave out what isn't their business: what you paid, your insurance details and your personal notes.
Before you hand over the keys
- Clear your phone, addresses and garage door codes from the car's system
- Sign out of the car maker's app and any toll tag
- Remove your plates if your state says to
- File the sale or release of liability with your state, and cancel your insurance on that car
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Track this automatically in Tagwell Auto
Tagwell Auto makes a service history PDF set up for a buyer: the full VIN, every service with its mileage, and no costs or personal notes. It can also save a history file the buyer opens in their own Tagwell Auto, so the car's story goes with it.
Questions
Do service records increase a car's value?
They give buyers proof the car was maintained, which helps you sell faster and defend your asking price.
What if I don't have receipts?
A written log of what was done, with dates and mileage, still helps. Recall repair records can be reprinted by a dealer.
Should I give the buyer my VIN?
Yes. A serious buyer needs it to check recalls and history. It's visible through the windshield anyway.
