EV tires wear faster. Here's why.

The short answer: electric cars are heavier than similar gas cars, and they deliver all their torque the moment you press the pedal. Both scrub rubber off the tires. Rotating on time and keeping the pressure right make the biggest difference.
Why it happens
- Weight. The battery adds hundreds of pounds. More weight on the same patch of rubber means more wear
- Instant torque. An electric motor gives full pull from a standstill. Quick launches wear the driven tires fast
- Regenerative braking. Slowing with the motor puts braking force through the driven wheels only
- Softer, quieter tires. Many EVs come on tires built for low noise and low rolling resistance, and some trade tread life for it
What helps
| Habit | Why |
|---|---|
| Rotate every 5,000 to 7,500 miles | It evens out the wear between the driven and undriven wheels |
| Check pressure every month | Low pressure wears the edges and costs range |
| Ease into the pedal | Hard launches are the fastest way through a set of tires |
| Get the alignment checked once a year | Heavy cars are hard on alignment, and a small error wears tires quickly |
Follow your owner's manual for the rotation interval and pattern. Some EVs have different tire sizes front and rear, which limits how they can be rotated.
Buying replacements
- Check the load rating. EVs often need a higher load index, sometimes marked XL or HL
- Tires made for EVs are built for the weight and the noise. They aren't required, but the load rating is
- Ask about the treadwear warranty, and keep your rotation records. Most warranties ask for them
Check the age too
A low-mileage EV can still be on old tires. Rubber ages whatever the tread looks like.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Questions
Do EV tires really wear faster?
Often, yes. The extra weight and instant torque wear tires faster than on a similar gas car. Driving style makes a big difference.
How often should I rotate tires on an EV?
Typically every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Check your owner's manual.
Do I need special tires for an electric car?
You need tires with the right load rating. EV-specific tires are tuned for weight and noise, but they aren't required.
