What maintenance does an EV need?
By Tagwell Auto · Last updated October 9, 2026

The short answer: less than a gas car, but not nothing. No oil, spark plugs, belts or exhaust. You still have tires, brakes, filters, coolant and a small 12V battery.
These are typical numbers, not your vehicle's own schedule. Your owner's manual wins.
EV schedules differ a lot between makers, so check yours.
What an EV still needs
| Job | Typical interval | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rotate tires | 5,000 to 7,500 miles | EVs are heavy and have instant torque, so tires wear faster |
| Check tire pressure | Monthly | Low pressure costs range |
| Cabin air filter | Every 1 to 2 years | Same as any car |
| Brake fluid | Test every 2 years, change when it fails | It absorbs water over time |
| Clean and lube brake calipers | Yearly where roads are salted | The brakes barely get used, so they can rust and seize |
| 12V battery | Test yearly after 3 years | It runs the locks, screens and computers, and fails without warning |
| Wiper blades and washer fluid | Yearly, or when they streak | Same as any car |
| Battery coolant | Only if your manual says so | Some makers never change it. Others do at 100,000 miles or more |
The brake surprise
Regenerative braking slows the car with the motor, so the brake pads can last 100,000 miles. The catch is that brakes that never work hard don't stay clean. In places with road salt, the caliper slide pins rust and stick. A yearly clean and lube is cheap. Seized calipers are not.
Leave the orange cables alone
Orange cables are high voltage. Don't touch them, and don't open anything they connect to. High-voltage work is for a trained technician.
Cold weather
Batteries lose range in the cold, often 20 to 40% in a deep freeze. Warm the cabin while the car is still plugged in, keep the tires at the right pressure, and plan charging stops closer together.
General guidance. Typical intervals, and your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Questions
Do electric cars need oil changes?
No. There is no engine oil to change. Some have gear oil in the drive unit that the maker may want changed at high mileage.
Why do EV tires wear faster?
EVs are heavier than similar gas cars and deliver full torque instantly. Rotating on schedule makes a real difference.
Do EVs need brake service?
Yes. The pads last a long time, but the fluid still ages and the calipers can seize from lack of use, especially where roads are salted.
