VIN decoder
Paste the 17 characters and it decodes as soon as the last one lands. Then see what that vehicle needs to keep up.
Your VIN goes only to NHTSA, the US government's vehicle database, to look it up. We don't store it.
Typical intervals from the app's own library. Your owner's manual wins.
What a VIN tells you
A vehicle identification number has 17 characters. The first three name the maker and the country. The next five describe the vehicle: body, engine and restraint systems. The ninth is a check digit. The tenth is the model year, the eleventh is the plant, and the last six are the serial number.
A VIN never uses the letters I, O or Q, so they can't be confused with 1 and 0.
Questions
Where do I find my VIN?
On the driver's side of the dashboard, read through the windshield from outside. On a sticker in the driver's door jamb. And on your registration and insurance card.
Is it safe to type my VIN here?
The VIN goes only to NHTSA, the US government's vehicle database, straight from your browser. It isn't sent to us and we don't store it. A VIN is also visible through your windshield.
Why does it say the check digit doesn't match?
North American VINs carry a check digit in position 9. If it doesn't match, one character is probably mistyped. The letters I, O and Q are never used, so check for 1 and 0.
Does it work for cars outside the US?
NHTSA's database covers vehicles sold in the United States best. Others may decode partly or not at all.
