Tire DOT date reader
Type the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall. You get the week, the year and the age.
How the code works
The first two digits are the week, from 01 to 53. The last two are the year. 2319 means the 23rd week of 2019.
| Tire age | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 6 years | Check tread and condition as usual |
| 6 to 10 years | Have them inspected every year, and plan to replace them |
| Over 10 years | Replace them, whatever the tread looks like. That includes the spare |
Tires age out at 6 to 10 years, whatever the tread. Trailers, RVs and spares are where old tires hide. Read more in How to read a tire's DOT date.
Questions
Where is the DOT code?
On the sidewall, starting with the letters DOT. If you only see a short code without four digits at the end, the full code is on the other side of the tire.
How old is too old?
Many tire and car makers say to replace tires at 6 years, and none later than 10, whatever the tread looks like. Check your owner's manual.
What if my code ends in three digits?
That tire was made before the year 2000. It is far too old to drive on.
