Hybrid Battery Pack Deterioration

The high-voltage battery pack has weakened. Some of its cells are holding less charge than the others.

Fix it soon

Can I keep driving? For a short while, gently. Have it checked in the next few days, and stop if the car feels, sounds or smells different. The car usually still drives, on the gas engine more than before. Orange cables are high voltage. Don't touch. This is work for a trained technician.

Common causes

  • An ageing battery pack
  • A weak cell or module
  • A clogged battery cooling fan or filter
  • Corroded battery connections

Listed roughly from most to least likely. The same code can have different causes on different cars.

What to do

  1. Check and clean the hybrid battery's cooling fan filter if your car has one.
  2. Have a hybrid specialist test the pack. Sometimes one module can be replaced.
  3. Check the hybrid battery warranty. It is often longer than the rest of the car's.

General guidance. Your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.
