Automatic transmission

P0741
Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

The transmission computer has found a fault with a sensor, a solenoid or the way the transmission is shifting.

Fix it soon

Can I keep driving? For a short while, gently. Have it checked in the next few days, and stop if the car feels, sounds or smells different. It may shift harshly, slip or lock in one gear to protect itself. Driving on a slipping transmission makes the repair bigger.

Common causes

  • Low, old or wrong transmission fluid
  • A failing shift solenoid or torque converter clutch
  • A speed or range sensor fault
  • Wiring or connector trouble
  • Internal wear

Listed roughly from most to least likely. The same code can have different causes on different cars.

What to do

  1. Check the transmission fluid level and condition if your car has a dipstick.
  2. Have the transmission computer scanned. It holds more detailed codes.
  3. Avoid towing and hard acceleration until it's diagnosed.

General guidance. Your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.
