Cooling fan

P0480
Fan 1 Control Circuit

The circuit that controls a radiator cooling fan has a fault.

Fix it soon

Can I keep driving? For a short while, gently. Have it checked in the next few days, and stop if the car feels, sounds or smells different. At speed, air through the radiator may be enough. In traffic the engine can overheat. If the gauge climbs, stop.

Common causes

  • A failed fan motor
  • A blown fuse or bad relay
  • Wiring or connector damage
  • A failed fan control module

Listed roughly from most to least likely. The same code can have different causes on different cars.

What to do

  1. Watch the temperature gauge, most of all in traffic and with the air conditioning on.
  2. Check the fan fuse and relay.
  3. Have the fan and its wiring tested.

General guidance. Your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.
