Knock sensor

P0328
Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

The sensor that listens for engine knock (pinging) has a circuit fault, so the computer can't protect the engine by adjusting the timing.

Fine to drive

Can I keep driving? Yes, in most cases. It won't hurt the car in the short term, but get it fixed. A check engine light that's already on can't warn you about a new problem. It drives normally, usually with a little less power. Avoid towing and hard driving until it's fixed.

What the words mean

  • Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. A four-cylinder engine has only one bank.
  • High means the signal voltage is higher than it should be, often an open circuit or a short to power.

Common causes

  • A failed knock sensor
  • Wiring damage, often from heat or rodents
  • A corroded connector

Listed roughly from most to least likely. The same code can have different causes on different cars.

What to do

  1. Use the fuel grade your manual asks for.
  2. Avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads until it's fixed.
  3. Have the sensor and wiring tested.

General guidance. Your owner's manual wins. If a red warning light is on or the car drives differently, stop safely and get help.

Tagwell Auto keeps your car's service dates and mileage, so when a code shows up you know what was done last. With a Bluetooth reader for the car's diagnostic port (called OBD-II), the phone app can read the code itself.
